Multnomah County’s (Ore.) Behavioral Health Division, in partnership with the Joint Office of Homeless Services (Portland, Ore.), is planning a new Behavioral Health Resource Center for people with mental illness who are experiencing homelessness in Portland, according to an article in the Portland Tribune.
The 24,000-square-foot project, developed in partnership with peer-run mental health nonprofit organizations, will include a $26 million renovation of the Bushong Building and an adjacent parking lot to create the center, which will house a day-use resource area on the ground and second floor and a 42-bed mental health shelter on the third floor where patients can stay for up to a month. A separate entrance will lead to a longer-term housing program on the fourth floor for 20 people, and the fifth floor will house administrative staff.
An adjacent plaza will be screened for privacy and will feature public art and pet area for patients who have companion animals. Services at the center will include mental health and substance use counseling, peer support, and basic medical services, as well as referral to housing and employment.
