FIRST LOOK: St. Paul’s Hospital, Vancouver

The new St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, will be the most extensive hospital redevelopment in the province’s history. A historical beacon of health and care in Vancouver, the hospital is dedicated to embracing and serving the community’s physical, emotional, social, and spiritual needs through compassionate care, teaching, and research. The new hospital will replace the current St. Paul’s Hospital, which has served the people of Vancouver for over 125 years, and will increase access to specialized care for the province. New walking and biking paths and nearby public transit options will connect the hospital and health campus to the community.

The new hospital will offer 548 beds, which include 115 more than the old hospital. It will also provide general and specialized care, including emergency and critical care, ambulatory services and outpatient clinics, chronic disease management services, HIV/AIDS care, mental health beds and programs, end-of-life care, indigenous healthcare services, maternity services, and community outreach programs.

Also housed there will be several provincial programs and referral centers for heart and lung care, renal, eating disorders, and specialty surgeries and transplants.

Integrated within the community it serves through parks, plazas, and infrastructure, this patient-centered campus will focus on sustainability and resiliency, as well as keeping patients healthy and cared for within their own community. The new hospital will be built on unceded land of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-WAututh First Nations band government in British Columbia. The spirit of the land, along with the culture and values of the local Nations of the territory, will be reflected across the campus as a whole, including the All Nations Sacred Space and Traditional Healing Garden.

The design-build project team includes builder PCL Construction (Edmonton, Canada) and architects HDR (Omaha, Neb.) in collaboration with Stantec (Edmonton).
