The four-story Cancer Institute for Thibodaux Regional Medical Center (TRMC) in Thibodaux, La., brings innovation and technology together. Its 80,000 square feet of space provides the Louisiana Bayou Region with the best cancer treatment available.
The original cancer center, a 13,500-square-foot, single-story building, had seen its program grow by 40 percent in the last few years prior to constructing the new center. TRMC can treat over 95 percent of all major cancers, offering patients throughout the area access to the highest quality cancer treatment available.
While privacy options are always in place and available for patients, the new facility offers 40 infusion bays that embrace an “open-air” flow and layout. Rather than receiving treatment in isolated pods, this solution allows patients the opportunity to openly communicate. The goal is to bring their shared experiences to the forefront in a supportive environment.
The facility includes radiation therapy and chemotherapy infusion, medical and radiation oncology clinics, clinic space for visiting oncology specialists, an education center, an activity center, a diagnostics center, a laboratory, an onsite infusion pharmacy, a conference center, and a chapel.
The atrium was designed as an open clerestory, infusing the space with as much natural light as possible. This works to minimize, or mitigate, the institutional nature of the hospital and create a more welcoming and supportive environment for patients, visitors, and staff.
