The Jacob K. Javits Convention Center in Manhattan is being transformed into a makeshift hospital in order to help contain COVID-19 cases in the city, according to Patch.
Four separate 40,000-square-foot hospitals will be built on the center’s main showroom floor, each containing 250 beds. Javits Center might also offer up an additional 1,000 beds for lighter medical care.
New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo said the state has 53,000 hospital beds, less than half of the 110,000 beds he estimates are needed to fight the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the article.
SUNY Stony Brook, SUNY Westbury, and Westchester Convention Center are also being eyed as temporary hospital sites, according to Spectrum News.
