D’Youville University Health Professions Hub, New York: 2023 Design Showcase Honorable Mention

D’Youville University Health Professions Hub

The D’Youville University Health Professions Hub in Buffalo, N.Y., was inspired by its challenging local landscape. For example, the city’s West Side neighborhood faces limited healthcare access, prevalent poverty, and food insecurity, while the greater region anticipates a critical shortage of healthcare professionals by 2024. The project’s intent is to turn those obstacles into opportunities.

Completed in August 2021, the Health Professions Hub serves as a community-focused center housing learning spaces, workforce development, virtual training courses, clinic with primary care, rehabilitation medicine, pharmacy, and more.

It both improves community access to care as well as to education in medical fields. The $27 million project was submitted to the Design Showcase by CannonDesign (Buffalo).

The design of its 59,000 square feet was informed by extensive public and stakeholder engagement exercises and offers diverse spaces that support education, collaboration, and socialization.

Meanwhile, the project showcases a partnership with the Buffalo AKG Art Museum’s public art team to ensure it enhanced the community. Examples of the effort include a dynamic mural on the façade by artist Maya Hayuk as well as pieces contributed by other community organizations and schools that fill the building interior.
