Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital Project Progresses

NYC Health + Hospitals/Coney Island (Brooklyn, N.Y.) recently unveiled a 7-foot bronze statue of late Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg that will be located in the lobby of the new Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital scheduled to open in 2023, according to the website nychealthandhospitals.org.

The ceremony marked a milestone in the project, which is part of the NYC Health + Hospitals/South Brooklyn Health campus that sustained significant damage from Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

The new hospital, funded by $923 million from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), will feature a storm-resilient design and a flood-proof emergency department (ED). Additionally, the rest of the healthcare campus will be upgraded with a 4-foot wall to withstand a 500-year storm and flood-resilient power, heating, cooling, and water systems.

The hospital is designed with a surgical suite with eight operating rooms, endoscopy suite, 80 private medical-surgical beds, 60 behavioral health beds, and clinical laboratories.

Following the opening of the Ruth Bader Ginsburg Hospital, an existing building on the campus is planned for renovation to become the Health & Wellness Institute. It will house an ambulatory care practice, outpatient behavioral health services, comprehensive dental practice, outpatient radiology, new CT scanner, ultrasound, and 3-D mammography equipment.
