The new Footscray Hospital in Melbourne, Victoria, Australia, is the largest single health infrastructure investment in Victoria and will support the increasing demand from Melbourne’s booming western suburbs. Goals include ensuring families can get the care they need close to home as well as lessening wait times and reducing pressure on nearby hospitals.
The new 2 million-square-foot hospital will replace the aging 1950s-era Footscray Hospital (Footscray, Victoria, Australia) and relocate to a new site a little over a half mile away. Following relocation to the new site, the former hospital will be decommissioned. The new 500-bed hospital will add increased outpatient, mental health, palliative care, and surgical services. It will provide care for almost 15,000 additional patients as the previous hospital and allow an extra 20,000 people to be seen by the emergency department each year compared to the current Footscray Hospital capacity.
Opening in 2025, the hospital is being delivered as a public-private partnership with Western Health (Footscray) as the public operator of all clinical services and the investor Plenary Health (Melbourne) consortium contracted by the Victorian Government to finance, design, construct, and maintain the hospital for 25 years following construction completion. The consortium comprises Plenary Group (sponsor, investor, and asset manager; Melbourne), Multiplex (builder; Melbourne), Honeywell (facility services provider), Compass Group (facility services provider), and Sojitz Corp. (investor).
The integrated design team is led by architects Cox Architecture (Melbourne) and Billard Leece Partnership (Melbourne) and Stantec (Melbourne) is providing engineering services to the project.
