Massachusetts General Hospital Plans $1.9B Project

Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH; Boston) is planning a $1.9 billion project to build two new towers at its downtown campus in Boston, according to an article in the Boston Globe.

The connected midrise towers will house 482 private beds and consolidate cardiac and cancer care services into one location. After closing and renovating old clinical areas, MGH would add 94 beds on top of the 1,043 existing beds. Underground parking with 191 additional spaces is also included in the plans.

The project is part of a broader strategy by MGH’s parent company, Mass General Brigham (Boston), to move more routine care to community hospitals and outpatient settings and free up space for the most acute patients at MGH.

Groundbreaking is slated for 2022. The first phase is scheduled to be completed in 2027 and the second in 2030.
