Denmark Hospital Adds New Wing

The Rigshospitalet specialized hospital in Copenhagen, Denmark, has expanded with a new patient wing.

The 581,251-square-foot project is spread out over seven floors and houses 209 patient rooms (including 196 single rooms with private bathrooms), 33 operating rooms, an intensive care unit, outpatient clinics, diagnostic imaging functions, and research spaces.

The layout for the facility was inspired by the lines on a cardiogram graph and features a zigzag design that’s intersected by a straight, main corridor that runs through the entire wing. Quiet zones and patient rooms are located within the surrounding zigzag structure away from the central corridor to minimize disturbances, while the design itself helps maximize daylight into patient rooms.

The project team includes LINK arkitektur (architect; Oslo, Norway), 3XN (Copenhagen), Nickl & Partner (München, Germany), Sweco (engineer and architectural consultant, Hovedstaden, Denmark), and Kristine Jensen Tegnestue (landscape architect; Aarhus, Denmark).
