Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority Completes Phase II Addition And Crisis Stabilization Unit In North Carolina

Cherokee Indian Hospital Authority (CIHA; Cherokee, N.C.) has completed the new phase II addition and crisis stabilization unit on the Cherokee Indian Hospital campus in Cherokee.

The nearly 77,000-square-foot addition will offer substance abuse treatment and behavioral health services.

The first floor houses an outpatient behavioral health clinic with 13 counseling rooms, an exam room, small and large group rooms, two large classrooms, arts and crafts group room, kitchen, and dining/living room. The center of the floor contains staff workstations and administrative offices.

The second floor houses the crisis stabilization unit with 18 inpatient rooms, four acute care rooms, two large group therapy rooms, a dining area, wellness gym, and accessible roof deck patio.

The design team worked with CIHA to incorporate Cherokee heritage throughout, including columns fashioned to resemble the trees of Western North Carolina and terrazzo flooring designed to tell Cherokee legends.

The project team comprises McMillan Pazdan Smith (architecture; Charlotte) and  Robins & Morton (construction manager; Charlotte, N.C.).
