Elevated above the city of Chula Vista, Calif., the seven-story Sharp Chula Vista Ocean View Tower, opened in January, is designed to create a presence on the hilltop campus of the Chula Vista Medical Center while connecting to the surrounding community.
The 197,000-square-foot tower adds 106 private patient rooms and six large operating rooms, including the region’s only hybrid procedure room for advanced cardiovascular treatments. The design-build project team of SmithGroup (Los Angeles and San Diego, Calif.), AVRP Skyport (San Diego), and Hensel Phelps (Irvine, Calif.) placed the patient rooms and public spaces to take advantage of panoramic views of San Diego’s downtown skyline to the north, mountains to the east, Mexico to the south, and the Pacific Ocean to the west.
Large expanses of glass, a sweeping new entrance, and an airy, two-story lobby designed with an elegant, neutral palette help to make the hospital feel more transparent and accessible to the Chula Vista community. An indoor-outdoor rooftop café and terrace occupies the entire seventh floor.
Designated corridors and elevators for materials handling, as well as separate patient and staff circulation areas, promote safety and infection prevention.
