Design for the Center for Health & Wellbeing, in Winter Park, Fla., set out to unite the three realms of well-being—fitness, medical care and wellness—into a single integrated building. The 83,000-square-foot center opened in February 2019 and was designed by Duda/Paine Architects.
The architecture draws inspiration from the inherent healing power of nature. For example, an undulating wood ceiling in the central commons warms the natural light that enters the building under deep overhangs, which are configured to temper the local climate’s intense sun.
The building’s combination of services and amenities come together with architectural and landscape features focused on wellness-related practices. Design of the landscape merges the building’s internal functions with walking trails that run through a series of gardens and seating areas.
